Women empowerment meaning and definition
Empowerment in different contexts can have different interpretations, but when it comes to women empowerment, it is defined as a process under which women are empowered by giving more rights and allowing them to be decision-makers. Woman empowerment is an issue which has picked hype in today’s world, but the concept is far older for the last thousandths of ears on of an equal treatment towards human Which is why the demand of getting equal treatment in every expects has become a major interest.
Empowerment not only means getting equal treatment also getting equal rights, opportunities, power, and authority. An individual can only get success in life when his basic needs are fulfilled and when enough opportunities in profession and education are given to them without any restrictions. The main motive behind empowering women is by giving them enough opportunities in their personal and professional life so that they can confidently excel in their careers and personal life.
Woman empowerment in Quran and Bible verses
Since forever our society perceives that women are deprived of freedom and equality in Islam. Islam gives women second place, which is just the opposite of the fact. There is a number of examples that proves glorious place of women in Islam and in other religions such as Christianity as well.
Before Islam women were considered as oppressed gender in society and they have not been given equal treatment and equal rights. They were killed and buried alive. As Islam ruled the world it gave provisions for the empowerment of women in many terms such as freedom, equality, economic empowerment, and dignity.
Women empowerment in Quranic verses
There are many verses in the Holy Book of Quran that supports the idea of women empowerment such as;
- “For man is a share of what the parents and the close related leaves and for women are a share of what parents and close relative leaves be it a little or much (legal share) _Quran 4:7
- “And whoever does righteous good be it male or female as a true believer in the name of Allah will enter paradise and not the least injustice even to the size of Naqiva ( Speck on the back of date._ Quran 4:124
- “And tell the believing woman to reduce (some) of their vision._ Quran 24:31
Women empowerment in Bible
Women empowerment is not just raised by Islam but we can also find traces of this idea in the Bible as well. Another renowned book of Christianity that mentioned women empowerment is the gospel of Luke and which says:
- “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her” Luke 1:45
- “She is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future” Proverbs 31:25
- “A wife of noble character who can find she is worth far more than rubies” proverb 31:10
- “A gracious woman gains respect but ruthless men only earn wealthy” proverb 11:16
How women can be empowered
The woman is a vital character in the development of any society so there should be mechanism and ways that help in empowering women. In today’s world empowering not only means treating with respect, but it is much more than that. Countries can only grow with sustainability when women become an active part of the development of that country. Women cannot only change the future of a child but they can change the future of the whole country. Here are four major sectors in which women empowerment is essential for the betterment of the country and women’s own self.
- Economic empowerment
Economic empowerment of women can help them to work outside of their houses and give them formal access to government programs and make them empowered economically. Economically empowered also means making them economically independent, which directly requires opportunities. So, women should be given enough job opportunities and property inheritance authority so that they can fully earn and support their families and themselves.
Another method in economic empowerment of women can be giving them microcredit or microfinance accessibility so that they can take loans and become financially independent either by being entrepreneurs or solopreneurs.
2.Political empowerment
Political empowerment means creating enough policies that support gender equality in both the public and private sectors. Increasing the job quota in the public and private job sectors is an example of political empowerment. Women should be given a fair chance to be elected and become leaders. Policymaking should also include the ease in divorce and welfare issues. Policies should also contain women’s active participation, involvement, and opinion in property inheritance. So theorist also suggests having bargaining agent’s where women can present their problems and can have an active participation on border level.

The Internet has increased opportunities for women to empower themselves. Various tools are accessible to billions of people where they can socialize, connect and empower themselves. Such sites include Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc. On this site, people can network and by marketing themselves properly they can access a number of opportunities to earn and make themselves better and groomed.
Term freelancing is very popular in today’s time, women can pitch on many freelancing websites and by learning one or two digital skills which are also available online, they can earn a decent amount of money. Internet opportunity not only gives the opportunity to earn but also to build connections. They can get recognition and influence over thousands or even millions of people.
4.Educational empowerment
Without good formal education, no person can be able to run in this fast-growing society. So, providing good education to women can help them empower themselves. In today’s society, many girls don’t go to school or drop out of school on their primary or junior school education. Empowering women also means giving them proper education so they can understand this world and the people in it. Education not only gives us the opportunity to earn but it also makes us able to deal with society in a better and appropriate way.
Barriers in women empowerment
No matter how much we talk about empowering women and giving a strategic approach to adapt it. There are always some huddlers in this way, such as cultural norms and social pressure. In many cultures women, equality and empowerment are not ingrained. Women are themselves scared to talk about their empowerment and as they are unaware of what empowerment is and how they have been treated since they were born. They have never seen such empowerment and society has been treating them as inferior characters since forever.
Harassment
Women are being catcalled, physically, and sexually harassed, which scattered their confidence to talk against it. cyberstalking and online harassment is a new trend now in which women are victimized. harassment is mainly done in different working place as well such as banks, schools, sales, marketing, and trade places. According to ( CEDAW ) reported that 54% of the women have experienced sexual harassment at their workplace. Other barriers in the way of empowering women include; wage gap, gender inequality, unfair job hiring, etc.
Women empowerment event and activities
Every year many events have been organized for raising awareness for women’s empowerment. 8 March is particularly celebrated as women’s empowerment day. On this day many women from many countries get together on road and make rallies along with banners and slogans indicating women’s independence and justice for equal rights.
There are many other events around the world that are held to empower, encourage, and aware women.
- WINS ( Women In Innovation): It held on 22 September 2020. This company created a thought-provoking presentation and gathered women to know how they can use technology to create social change.
- Success! Summit for women entrepreneurs: In this event 156 women entrepreneurs were gathered in Los Angeles. They shared their success and offered a business plan to help other women grow as well.
